What Is Babbitting?

Babbitt is an alloy composition of several metals, and its purpose is to provide a bearing surface. While in its molten form, the Babbitt is poured into a mold for the specific use of being a good wearing material - based on its composition of metals.
 

Although Babbitting has been used in all types of machinery work, it was used in automobiles proficiently until the late 1950s because of its cost and ability to correct inaccurate machinery work that was produced by the industry.

Babbitting has vastly improved since those early days, specifically in the chemistry of the metal and in strength and durability. Although the art of Babbitting is still the same, modern technology has greatly benefitted the process.
